Infant India, Muthialpet

As soon as the above activity started in the nineties, Volontariat contributed at the initiative of Mr Elumalai, one of its former car drivers, to open evening classes in his area of Muthialpet.
There, in a rather affluent suburb of Pondichery, he receives, in his house, every evening, school children who do their homework and revise their lessons. They are divided into two classes. The children are mainly from poor families: rickshaw wallas or fishermen coolies, who live in the neighborhood.
The number of children attending evening classes is now quite stable at around 90. Tutors are paid by Volontariat that also provides whenever it is necessary, school materials, bags and uniforms to these children who are not sponsored and include them in its holiday camps.

Program OM Shanti, Dubraypeth

In 2001, OHFOM (Oeuvres Hospitalières françaises de l’Ordre de Malte) was able to be present in India, whereas they are mainly established in French speaking Africa. They had decided to support some programmes in Delhi, Pondicherry and Chennai. Thanks to Mr. Aubé, a Member of Ordre de Malte France and OHFOM, a friend and a generous donor who unfortunately died in December 2008 –, Amaidhi and Thendral Illam, homes for the old people, were built and financially supported. Volontariat decided to work in collaboration with this association that usually works for leprosy surveying and medical care.
Children’s food is delivered daily by Volontariat catering services. A dispensary is regularly run by one OM Shanti nurse and a Doctor is coming whenever needed. A social worker, together with the person in charge, receives applications, makes enquiries about the families (children admission, assistance, prevention campaigns etc.). There is much work to do in this difficult area and the approach to the community through the children enables social workers to reach the most needy families.

Sandesh Illam

“Sandesh Illam”, “the house of Sandesh” in Tamil, is a social and educative programme for the children of a disadvantaged suburb of Thengaithittu, near Pondicherry.
Here are the activities of the association :
  •  A crèche for the small ones from 1 to 3,
  •   Evening classes for children from 5 to 16
  •   Extra scholar activities: dance, yoga, drawing, etc,
  •   A health follow-up,
  •   Distribution of books, notebooks, uniforms, schoolbags, etc,
  •   Daily, a midday meals for crèche children and a snacks before evening classes,
  •   An individual insurance.
Sandesh Illam surely is a “daughter” of Volontariat, affectively and by its objectives, but morally and financially is independent, the children are fully supported by our friends and relatives. Volontariat helps us for the administration. One day, we hope to be constituted into an autonomous association.
